The artist’s statement for this mixed media piece, “Snæfellsjökull Glacier – please don’t disappear!”, says it all:

“Because of global warming, the Snæfellsjökull glacier, on one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland, has decreased 1/3 in volume over the last 10 years. Experts say that the glacier might disappear over the next 20 years, if the climate remains so.

As we do not want the Snæfellsjökull glacier to disappear, I have nailed and tied it down.”

Artist Vigdís Bjarnadóttir lives and works in Iceland, and was inspired to create a series of paintings after reading a news article about how climate change is causing the glacier to melt at a rapid pace.

Her paintings of Snæfellsjökull glacier were exhibited at Imago Mundi: The Art of Humanity.
