This is an excellent photo essay in Bloomberg about Fort McMurray and the recent wildfire.

Reading this essay is a reminder of just how much investment we have in oil, and how difficult it is going to be to get off fossil fuels.

“By 2040, [the oil sands] will provide 79 percent of Canada’s crude, up from 60 percent today.”

The world needs to be at ZERO fossil fuels by 2050 to stay below +2C and climate catastrophe. And yet these oil companies are banking on continued and increased production.

“Alberta’s pending oil and gas projects total more than $89 billion in investment.”

You think they’re going to give up that huge investment without a fight? How on earth are we going to do this?
