Cowspiracy is a documentary about how raising animals for food is contributing to climate change. In the United States, animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire transportation sector.
Food is a tricky issue; we are loathe to change how we eat. We don’t like to hear that how we eat is not good for us, or for the planet. You might feel defensive; you might feel like you should be able to eat like you want to.
But even if you do, spend some time to watch the movie. No one’s forcing you to change how you eat; but perhaps after watching the movie, you might think about it a bit; you might even cut back on meat products a bit. And every little bit helps.
Americans eat more meat now than we ever have. Meat used to be a special treat; now it’s a daily habit. If we went back to thinking of meat as a special treat, like our great grandparents did, could we prevent climate change? Maybe. It’s worth considering.
Cowspiracy is available for streaming on Netflix. You can see the basic facts about animal agriculture and climate change on the Cowspiracy web site.
