Sometimes simple and straightforward is the most effective. UK artist Ellie Harrison created her “Early Warning Signs” in 2011: four signs, each of which is adopted by an organization who agrees to display the sign for a year. The signs slowly rotate showing “climate” and “change” to anyone who stops to look.

In its third year now, the signs are currently at Spike Island Contemporary Art Space in Bristol, The Tetley Gallery in Leeds, Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, and NN Contemporary Art Gallery in Northampton.

I like the idea of a long term visible reminder of the great challenge we face with climate change; a constant reminder that it’s not an issue that will go away. We will be dealing with this for the foreseeable future, including many generations from now.

What kinds of reminders do you think would be effective in Bainbridge? And, what is “effective”? Is it inspiring people to make a change, or become politically active?
