For Art Basel, Miami Beach this year (Dec 1-4, 2015), artist Lars Jan created an installation piece titled “Holoscenes” to highlight the issue of sea level rise due to climate change… an entirely appropriate topic for Miami Beach, which is already threatened by the 8″ of sea level rise on the Atlantic coast, and is due for 3-6 feet more by 2100.

His piece features eight scenes of people doing every day activities – reading the paper, gathering food, playing the guitar – in aquarium tanks as the sea water rises around them.

An observer noted, “They are struggling to do all the things they used to but, with all the changes, now they can’t. The water coming up and down, it’s like the points in your life when you think, now I have it under control, and you don’t.”
