Air, Water, and Soil: Local Farmers on a Changing Environment @ Bainbridge Performing Arts

Joel Sackett will present a series of photographs from his forthcoming book on farming in the area, titled “Air, Water, and Soil: Local Farmers on a Changing Environment.” An opening reception will be held at Bainbridge Performing Arts on April 1, and the photographs will be available for viewing in the gallery all month long.

Email-a-tree @ Winslow, Bainbridge Island, WA

Email-a-tree is a program by Elisabeth Robson and Olaf Ribeiro, in conjunction with the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District.

Along with Olaf’s presentation about trees (April 23), you will be able to email special trees around the island during April. Each tree has been assigned an email address and will be receiving emails all month long. You might even get a reply!

To see which trees will be receiving emails and where they are located, check out the Email-a-tree page.

To get the email address of a tree, you must visit the tree in person. Please don’t forget to say hello to the tree while you are there.

We will be gathering emails sent to the trees and featuring them on the web site during and after April. If you would like to organize a walking tour of the trees, please contact Olaf Ribeiro.

Poetry Corners @ Downtown Winslow

April is National Poetry Month! In 2016 Arts & Humanities Bainbridge is partnering with Earth Art Bainbridge to explore the theme
Art + Climate = Change. Amateur, student, and professional poets are encouraged to submit their poems for the annual Poetry Corners displays.

The month-long festival is inspiring artists from all genres contribute and encourages residents to participate in and attend events across the island throughout the month of April.

The final selections from the juried poetry competition will be displayed in public windows throughout Bainbridge Island during the month of April and shared aloud at a celebration reading, Poetry Corners LIVE!

The Bainbridge Island Photo Club presents images by Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Selgado in the main hall of the BI Community Center during the month of April. Selgado documents the human condition around the world. His high contrast black and white images are rich in the powerful stories they tell, their textural qualities and their composition. The club will discuss how this photographer explores man’s impact on the environment, the raw beauty of our planet, and tells his personal journey in support of healing the planet through his art.

The Photo Club will be showing The Salt of the Earth: The Photo Work of Brazilian Sabastiao Selgado, an Academy Award nominated film about Selgado, on April 27.

April is Earth Art Bainbridge month – an ongoing community effort to learn about climate change through art. Join Nature Nuts during spring break as we piece together a great puzzle – What is happening to our climate? By working together to create a collaborative masterpiece, making individual craft projects, and connecting with nature during our daily adventures, we will learn what our planet needs to stay healthy. If you love the Earth, then this is the camp for you!

On Monday mornings in April, KiDiMu invites families to celebrate Earth through art. Children and their grown-ups will enjoy a new eco-themed art project each week. Messy experimentation and sensory exploration will not only be allowed but also encouraged. Drop by anytime between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Adult Assemblage Art Workshop using recycled materials with Steve Parmelee @ Strawberry Hill Center
Apr 16 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Students will alter and combine salvaged objects to create an evocative, earth-aware, 3-dimensional art piece with a focus on climate change. Learn techniques and tricks about tools and materials used to repurpose discarded items into new works of art. Junking to conceptualizing, arrangements, and fastening methods will be discussed and applied. All skill levels welcome.

This Youth and Adult art workshops is a collaboration between The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District and Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, in support of Earth Art Bainbridge. Following the classes, an online exhibition featuring students’ work will be posted on the BAC website, www.bacart.org and available to the community. All participating students are welcome to include their work.

Island Theatre presents Seascape @ Bainbridge Public Library

Island Theatre will present a staged play reading of Edward Albee’s Seascape for its Earth Art Bainbridge program. Written in the seventies, the play asks the question, “Are an evolving species or perhaps a devolving one?” It was awarded the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
