Lorenzo Quinn is an internationally known sculptor, with installations around the world. After seeing the devastation from hurricanes in Thailand and the United States a few years ago, he set out to create a series of sculptures titled Force of Nature. He says:

We humans think of ourselves as supreme beings, above all others and in absolute control of our destiny and our surroundings. We live with a false sense of security only to be awakened by Mother Nature’s fury, almost as if she needs to remind us of her presence and our responsibility towards her child (The Earth).

The sculptures in the series depict Mother Nature flinging the earth around her, as if in a rage. After witnessing the destruction that humans have wrought upon the Earth—the devastation in the tar sands oil fields in Canada, or the burning of the Amazon Rainforest, for instance—it is easy to imagine Mother Nature exacting her revenge.

We continue to court her anger as we pump oil and gas out of the ground, blow the tops off mountains to extract coal, and emit billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere causing glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, ocean acidification, desertification, and more. Mother Nature will not sit idly by and watch, these powerful sculptures say. Be prepared for fury.
